Rap

I have to be honest, I’m a little tired of rappers talking about cars, big screen tvs, blunts, 40s, and women.

Okay I lied, I’m utterly sick of it. I mean, how many different ways can you splice up “I’ll kill you,” “I’m better than you,” “I smoke a lot of weed,” “I have more money than you,” and “I have a lot of sex?”

*Yawn*

I’ve been trying to branch out and listen to more rap of late. As much as I enjoy the genre the selection of artists I’ve listened to in the past is regretably rather small. A friend recommend Jay-Z’s Blueprint “trilogy” (it’s four albums) so I’ve been working through it. I know it’s lame that Jay-Z is me “branching out” but hey, if you can’t make fun of yourself a little what’s the point?

Let me say this, on those four albums there are a ridiculous number of great songs. One of my favorites is “A Dream” where Jay-Z talks about a discussion he had with the deceased Notorious BIG while asleep. The song wraps up by taking the first verse from BIG’s “Juicy” and including it in the song.

Pretty sweet hey? As a bonus there are great messages peppered throughout the tune. Here are a couple of my favorite lines:

“Remind yourself, nobody built like you, you design yourself”

“What he said I said has been said before. Just keep doing your thing, he said, say no more.”

Caffeine withdrawals are nasty business but I’m over the hump. Things were pretty rough for awhile though. For the first few days I wondered if I needed a doctor.

Truth be told I’m not sure Dr. Dre would have been the doctor I needed. After all, my problem wasn’t that my album sales weren’t doing too good as much as I just felt genuinely terrible.

Anyway, this is one of the best rap songs I’ve heard in the past few years so I thought I’d pass it on. The entire video is awesome but if you want to skip straight to the song it starts at 2:45.

This is a 17 year old kid from Toronto rapping. Is he any good? This is Best Music Ever(.net), of course he is.

History time everybody!

Did you know that rap is a relatively new genre with origins in the 1970s? Today rap is largely dominated by West Coast rap which overtook mainstream in 1992 when Dr. Dre released “The Chronic.”

West Coast rap is…well, most of the songs are about (a) how awesome the rapper is and how you suck, (b) how rich the rapper is, (c) the variety of drugs the rapper does/has done, and (d) how the rapper gets all the women, ’cause he’s pretty fly.

So it’s the stuff the radio generally plays, but did you know that there is East Coast rap too? Oh yes. In fact, if you’re needing a little education on the history of rap this video compliments of Mr. Timberlake and Mr. Fallon will help you out. Enjoy!

Deltron 3030 is a group consisting of Kid Koala, Del the Funkee Homosapian, and Dan the Automator. Their first album, also called Deltron 3030, is a rap opera taking place in the far future (the year 3030 no less) where corporations rule and a multitude of problems exist.

3030 is the first song on the album and it brilliantly sets the stage for what is to come. If you’re a fan of rap beyond the scope of women, cars, or killing people we highly recommend you check the group out.

P.S. For the fans of Deltron 3030 who have been waiting ten years for a sequel album, you shouldn’t have to wait much longer. Kid Koala has said it should be out in 2010. Let’s hope!
