Classic

Once again, we’re going classical here on BestMusicEver – and for good reason.

For the past two nights, I’ve been up til 2 in the morning trying to learn this song on piano. Although I had taken lessons as a child, I’ve definitely become rusty after not touching a keyboard for 7ish years. It’s been a painful experience trying to read sheet music again and make my fingers work properly. Now I’m not one to brag, but I can now play the first 41 bars of the first movement of Moonlight Sonata. No big deal!

Up until an hour ago, I found it crazy that I am now intensely practicing an instrument that I hated so much as a child. When I started thinking about why I’m doing this, I knew it must be because of the music. This is probably my favouite song ever. Yes ever!

Here’s Wilhelm Kempff playing the 1st movement of this amazing song. And he doesn’t even look at the piano for most of the song. Un-freaking-real.

Ahh, It’s good to be back.

We’re not entirely convinced that anything has to be said here. So…umm…here goes…

This song has soul-searing lyrics and killer melodies. It is slow and gentle but yet hard rock. It’s [insert every good descriptive word ever].

Fun fact time! Stairway To Heaven was released in 1971 and – no surprise – it quickly gained popularity. Since then it has been played a gazillion times on the radio (it received a whopping 44 years worth of back-to-back radio play within the first 20 years of its release). Oh, some people think that there are embedded messages about Satan when you play the song backwards, but those people are probably crazy.

Ahh, classic rock at it’s finest. Supertramp are a musically gifted group, proved in ‘Crime of the Century’.

The second half of the song is where it truly shines. It’s a powerful section you will find yourself replaying over and over.

And there’s a sax solo too? Epic.
