Did you know that rap is a relatively new genre with origins in the 1970s? Today rap is largely dominated by West Coast rap which overtook mainstream in 1992 when Dr. Dre released “The Chronic.”
West Coast rap is…well, most of the songs are about (a) how awesome the rapper is and how you suck, (b) how rich the rapper is, (c) the variety of drugs the rapper does/has done, and (d) how the rapper gets all the women, ’cause he’s pretty fly.
So it’s the stuff the radio generally plays, but did you know that there is East Coast rap too? Oh yes. In fact, if you’re needing a little education on the history of rap this video compliments of Mr. Timberlake and Mr. Fallon will help you out. Enjoy!
On October 1st, Bag Raiders released their first full length CD (FINALLY). To honor the occasion, today’s song is ‘Shooting Stars’, a song originally released as a single in 2009.
The tune is divided into 2 halves, beginning with a catchy little melody/bassline part and ending with a lyric driven outro. It’s a slick little song, with just a hint of disco.
While writing this, the Bag Raiders song ‘Golden Wings’ (track 10 on the album) came on – it’s AWESOME. Make sure you check that one out too!
Deltron 3030 is a group consisting of Kid Koala, Del the Funkee Homosapian, and Dan the Automator. Their first album, also called Deltron 3030, is a rap opera taking place in the far future (the year 3030 no less) where corporations rule and a multitude of problems exist.
3030 is the first song on the album and it brilliantly sets the stage for what is to come. If you’re a fan of rap beyond the scope of women, cars, or killing people we highly recommend you check the group out.
P.S. For the fans of Deltron 3030 who have been waiting ten years for a sequel album, you shouldn’t have to wait much longer. Kid Koala has said it should be out in 2010. Let’s hope!
Kanye is trying to teach the naughty children of the internet that when one person hacks his files and leaks an unfinished song off his upcoming album, he will temporarily stop with the weekly free Friday songs. We get this. He puts up a free song every week and yet someone still felt the need to hack and then post an unfinished song. Too bad.
Pro-tip music fans: As this article points out, the music you listen to is only as good as its weakest link. For most of you this will be either your headphones or laptop speakers. If you need new speakers, we highly recommend Logitech’s Amazing Z-5500 5.1 system. You’d better believe that’s an affiliate link.
Dream Theater is being inducted into the music hall of fame. Well deserved.
French musicians will now “be paid for the distribution of their works on YouTube.”
Linkin Park released a new CD a couple weeks back. We were sitting in high school when Hybrid Theory was huge, and rumors are that the music is quite different from what it was so we’re curious to check it out.
Have a great weekend music fans. We’ll see you on Monday.
Last Wednesday we mentioned a band called OceanLab, a side-project of the legendary electronic group Above and Beyond and vocalist Justine Suissa. In the ten years they’ve been producing together OceanLab has created a plethora of trance classics.
The thing that makes OceanLab so great is their unique, highly emotional sound. OceanLab is largely a concept group: the vast majority of their songs sound like music created by a people who live in the middle of the ocean, both floaty and lonely at the same time. Enjoy an example while you continue reading (remember to hit the jump first and then press play).
Silversun Pickups are a rare type of band – you know, the ones that make you scratch your head and wonder why they’re not more famous than they are.
Choosing which song of theirs to post was rough, but Lazy Eye from their album Carnavas came out on top. It’s their most popular song for good reason: the hook won’t leave your head for days. Plus it has a vintage sound, like it was recorded using old school analog technology.
Make sure you grab the full version of the song, not the single. The single chops off two and a half minutes of music – such a tragedy.
We’ve been listening to DI.fm for a few years now, and frequent readers will know that we’re huge fans of their service (it’s free). In case you don’t know, DI.fm is an online radio station that plays exclusively electronic music across every genre you can think of – and plenty you can’t.
About a year ago they put out a new channel called Chillout Dreams. The music on this channel is so utterly…well, it’s chill. But floaty, like everything is OceanLab meets ATB meets Conjure One’s Endless Dream. That may not mean much to readers who don’t listen to a lot of trance, but basically everything is exactly like this:

It’s Friday which means it is music news day. Ohhh yeah!
New Releases: Maroon 5 released a new CD this week, and so did Selena Gomez…you know what, we’d better just pass on the full weekly list.
We live in Vancouver and for a while we’ve been wondering why there aren’t a lot of music subscription/streaming services in Canada. Turns out, it’s because the fees to these services are astronomical, especially for mobile streaming.
A bunch of people have been trying to figure out the name of the song with the accordion in the middle of it, and what would we be good for if we didn’t help you out? The song’s name is Stereo Love, and it’s so catchy you’ll be cursing us in a few days when you can’t get it out of your head.
Seriously, it will drive you insane. You’re welcome!
This is a trance classic. Really it’s more of the classic of the classics, though it did come out 2004 so I guess not the classic of the classics, but certainly a classic…kind of. Anyway, if you listen to trance you need to have this song in your playlist. You know, because it’s a classic.
In case you didn’t know Motorcycle is actually Gabriel and Dresden and the singer in this song is Jes. Also, Taxigirl is Tiesto (and Jes too). Crazy right? Minds are being blown.
P.S. How I Met Your Mother returns tonight so we expect every last one of you to be suited up!
